Conversations with Par - Where Caddyshack meets Bagger Vance, Zen Golf and Shivas Irons!
A Transformational golf fable by Peter Melton
[Monterey Bay Area, California] — In this imaginative new book, Conversations with Par: How a Frustrated Golfer Found Joy through Golf, author Peter Melton takes readers on a journey deep into the mind and heart of a disgruntled golfer.
“What the hell is par anyway?” Melton said this to himself at the end of a particularly upsetting round. Moments later he started hearing things in his head, it was the voice of an unexpected coach – Par itself.
“The voice claimed to be the voice of Par. Yes, the Par from golf! From that moment I knew, my golf game would never be the same.”
As the light hearted and deep conversation continued, the golfer (Melton) sees his golf game transformed from a source of frustration into a pathway to joy and self-discovery.
Scheduled to be released on October 1st, this unique and relatable fable explores how years of golf frustration can shift with some new perspectives.
“I didn’t realize how much my unexamined mental game was affecting my overall enjoyment of golf.”
Melton, a lifelong golfer, recounts his own struggle with the mental challenges of the game and introduces readers to a mystical, playful character named “Par.” Through a series of engaging dialogues, metaphors and experiments, Par leads Melton through the “mental hazards” of golf, ultimately shifting his perspective from an obsession with his score to a profound appreciation of the beauty and gifts that are woven in every aspect of the game.
A Story for Every Golfer
Conversations with Par is for anyone who has ever felt disappointed, defeated or alone on the course. It is also for anyone who has ever wondered why golf, a sport they claim to love, can sometimes feel like a battlefield. This book is a delightful companion for golfers of all ages and skill levels, offering insights that reach beyond the fairways and into everyday life.
“Golf is so much more than just your score,” says Melton. “This book is an invitation to shift the focus from frustration and the never-ending quest to get better, to enjoying every moment on the course. Par taught me that there’s beauty waiting in every shot and we choose to see it or not.”
Beyond Golf – A New Perspective on Life
With wisdom reminiscent of Golf in the Kingdom and The Legend of Bagger Vance, coupled with the humor of Caddyshack, Conversations with Par goes beyond traditional golf advice. Melton’s story of self-discovery and mental resilience will resonate with anyone seeking peace and fulfillment amid the challenges of golf and life. The book is full of insights into the art of play and those nuggets can serve as reminders to embrace this moment and the power you have to access joy.

Peter in the Media
This is the video clip that went viral in the Summer of 2023. In 2013 I was invited to share the Invis-a-ball Training for a documentary by Random Golf Club Founder Erik Anders Lang. It has almost 2 million views and a trail of fascination, confused and curious golfers in its wake. FORE!
This Country Club Adjacent interview in the Fall of 2023 was amazing. Three Southern Cal comedians and me exploring and joking about the game of golf, the game of life and so much more. We had a full discussion about playing golf without a ball and also a chat about my upcoming book, Conversations with Par.
The guys at Country Club Adjacent heard the podcast where I shared about my unique golf ideas and they wanted to hear all about it. The link above is the 3 hole Invis-a-ball match I played against Griff and below is our 53 minute interview.

The Reception to Peter’s Invis-a-ball
Conversations With Par is a Zen koan. It is the sound of one hand clapping. It is a book for the inner child in you yet it is not a children’s book. The farther I delved into Peter Melton’s story, the more I related to its messages and the deeper my enjoyment. It became not just a conversation that I wanted to hear; it became a conversation I needed to hear. Peter shares how he became his own guru and best friend on the golf course and reclaimed his love for the game. It is told with lots of heart and clever turns of phrases. And if you will excuse the pun, you will learn that golf is much more than just a metaFore! If you want to smile, really smile, read this book.
